Fun in the city

So my roommate M has a group of dancers that he works with and they asked me to do a photo shoot for them, mostly promo stuff for their website. We went out into the city and around where V lives and they were goofy and fun and just being themselves so that's what I wanted the images to come out as. Fun and goofy and I had fun shooting and editing them. Let me know what you think.

FINALLY!!! After moving out to Oakland, getting myself situated , buying the wrong upgrade and then buying the right upgrade for photoshop and then having to upgrade my operating system, finally I have some new images to share. These particular ones are of a wonderful girl named Becca. You may be seeing more of her in the future. Also I have a couple more shoots that I need to edit and those will be up very shortly.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival 2011

Here is just a snippet of the great experience that I had at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. A man named Warren Hellman pays for a weekend long festival of bluegrass/blues/folk musicians in Golden Gate Park. I was lucky enough to experience this with my friend Maggie Peach and we had a great time. I got to see Earl Scruggs, Gillian Welch, The Devil Makes Three, Joe Purdy (who has the voice of an angel) and a couple more people. Everyone was having a great time and enjoying this wonderful gift to San Francisco. Unfortunately I wasn't completely focussed on photographing more than listening to music and I missed a couple of great shots. But there is always next year!:)

Before I left Boston I took some portraits of my roomies whom I miss dearly. One of them did not come out so great but I didn't want to leave anyone out. Also I got to celebrate my 25th birthday here in Berkeley, CA and Gaba's mom made me a cake!! She is so nice and it was delicious:)

Let's go fly a kite! I went to the Berkeley marina with Gaba the other day and it was beautiful. There were a ton of people flying kites and walking/running around. It was a great day.

It's been a while but I have some photos from a couple of day trips Will and I have taken this summer. One was to Beaver Lake which is beautiful and all was well until about 20 minutes in and the swamp was upon us and therefore the mosquitos were upon me, literally. I really don't see the point of their lives. Anyway the other is from the Rose Garden near Syracuse University. Also very pretty. Here you go...

Meet Scoop and Mookie

Named after two Syracuse basketball players. I got two new fish friends and up until now they have hid under their log every time I walked in the room. One recently laid eggs (they are hybrid fish and can't actually fertilize the eggs so nothing came of it) and they then became very tough and would hover over their eggs as though I was going to steal them. But that is just the story of how I got a decent enough photo to introduce them to you. They are cute.

Will and I have taken a job being sort of secret shoppers and it has brought us as far north as Lake Placid. That is where all of these accept for the water were taken. I have never seen trees so big. The water is from the pool in the backyard. Anyone care for a swim?

They hide every time I am near the tank. But they are starting to warm up which is nice. They are cute and I like to watch them. On a completely unrelated note, here are some photos.

Will and I have had to drive all over NY state and it has been a good opportunity for exploratory photography so there will be some more soon. And I think I am becoming slightly obsessed with the zoo. Good thing since we're getting married there. Anyway, have a good night all.

This is some new studio 4x5 work that I have been using to move myself out of the norm. I am hoping for new ideas and work to spring out of my slowing down and giving myself time. These are both scans from prints, but they scanned pretty well. The top print was printed and toned. I hope you dig. Thanks!

Another image from the upstate series. I am trying to move away from making the series in one type of shooting and slowing down my images in the case of this image and also making fast 35mm images. I want to show the diversity of upstate through my different cameras formats and compositions. We will see what works out and what doesn't as the project progresses. I am currently in the process of a body of work named "upstate", my goal is to show the world of upstate New York through my eyes. What I experience and what I do. It is going to be a more in depth statement soon when I am through the state of mentally figuring out what I want to convey. So for now I shoot. Hopefully I will be able to update more photographs soon. Also I had a small look at Doug DuBois new book out on Aperture "All the Days and Nights". Fantastic work. You should check it out.

if you haven't seen this photographer you may have been living under a rock since 2007. Boogie is a prominent NY and overseas photographer that is just killing the game in every aspect of street and documentary photography. Ashlin bought me "It's All Good" for Christmas last year and I look at that book every week for shooting fuel. Even if you don't shoot street or documentary the portraits and the urban landscapes will speak to anyone. Beautiful work.

The best blog that i have seen in a while. Nothing gives me more inspiration on a weekly basis than this blog right here. Hip hop, punk, biking, skateboarding, graffiti, architecture, Basketball, Women, and just cool stuff. There is nothing better than this blog. Just check it out from the beginning, its pretty hard to take everything in at first so check it a few times and look back on it. If you are like me you will find some things to use in your own work. If not at least I hope it makes you feel good, because I know it makes me feel great.

The first ever Aperture cover that is not a photograph. It is a little late for me to post this, but very relevant to me. William Eggleston is an inspiration for me to continue my work and my process even when it gets looked down on. Just keep working, is all you can do and things will work out. I have a meeting at the North Syracuse library today for the planning of my first show there! If you are in the Syracuse area within the next month or so it would be great if you could stop in! So I was wrong about the ability to scan my negatives at college. Apparently it is not allowed by my professors because I am not in the right photo classes or what have you. I am not certain. In turn I am now on the hunt for a scanner or a place to scan in the Syracuse area. So if you know, let me know.

These are some more photographs from the wedding that Ashlin and I shot together in CT a few months ago. Which is not really relevant time wise but I find them to be interesting photographs. I re-started photography school yesterday at Onondoga Community College in Syracuse which is a positive and a negative thing. Starting school behind where you left off is never good, but being back in school is always a positive thing right? especially now. I also received word that I will be getting my own black and white printing set up from a very kind man in the city of Syracuse who was nice enough to donate it to me. Now I don't have to rely on the school's facilities or leaving my house into that brutal upstate snow.
